Acclaimed playwright Matt Pelfrey’s adaptation of John Ball’s In the Heat of the Night is based on the award-winning book that inspired the Oscar-winning film and the Emmy-winning television series.

The film “In the Heat of The Night” starring Sydney Poitier and Rod Steiger won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Steiger, and Best Screenplay.

The very successful television series that followed starring Carroll O’Connor and Howard Rollins won O’Connor an Emmy for Best Lead Actor.

CCP is thrilled to star one of its own who has become a successful television and film actor in Los Angeles, Dingani Beza, in the iconic Sydney Poitier role, Mr. Tibbs.

PLEASE NOTE: This play is an explosive, intense drama with adult language and situations and racially charged language and story line. That shameful chapter of racial hatred in our history unfolds in a small segregated Southern town woven through a compelling murder mystery.

This drama is not appropriate for children.

It’s 1962. A hot August night lies heavy over the small town of Argo, Alabama. A dead white man is discovered and the local police arrest a black stranger named Virgil Tibbs.

The police discover that their prime suspect is in fact a homicide detective from California.

As it happens, Tibbs becomes the racially-tense community’s single hope in solving a brutal murder that is turning up no witnesses, no motives, and no clues.
